Traditional Japanese New Year in Shimane・島根県で初めての伝統的なお正月

皆さんこんにちは！
I spent a bunch of time drafting and re-writing messages to write on new years cards. I read online that it's nice to handwritten personal messages. After having my coworker revise my messages, I wrote them out on New Years cards to send out to close friends who have have done a lot for me since I moved to Japan. Once I had my cards written out, I went to the post office after work on Christmas Day, to make sure that my cards would reach my friends in the morning on January 1st. I let my friends know ahead of time, so not only was it my first time sending New Years cards, but my first time receiving them in the mail as well. It was pretty exciting!
何時間もかけて、年賀状の下書きと書き直しをして、がんばって作りました。ネットで手書きの年賀状のほうが丁寧と知り、一生懸命がんばって作りました。同僚も文法をチェックしてくれました。日本に来て以来、いろいろなことを手伝ってくれた仲の良い人達やお世話になった家族たちのために書きました。年賀状が完成したら、元日までに届くように郵便局に行って出しました。
On New Years Eve, I was grading papers, when my friends invited me to a party. I figured, you're only young once, so I went to Osaka to play games and count down with them. In the morning, I would be going to Shimane though, so it probably wasn't the brightest idea. I only got about 4 hours of sleep, but I had fun, so I guess it was worth it. My childhood friend in the U.S. scolded me for being so reckless though.
大晦日の夜は、生徒の原稿を採点している途中に、友達がパーティーに誘ってくれました！まだ若いから、青春は思い切り楽しめばよいものと思い、大阪まで行って、皆とゲームやカウントダウンをしました。次の朝は島根に行く予定だったから、ちょっと無謀だったかもしれませんが、なんとかなりました。４時間ぐらいしか寝ませんでしたが、楽しかったから大丈夫でした。アメリカにいる幼馴染にそう言ったら、そんな無謀なことをして、とひどくしかられました。
I left my apartment at about 6:30 am, to catch an early train to Osaka to meet my best friend and his family in Osaka. While waiting for the train, I got to watch the first sunrise. It was super relaxing. The train ride from Nara to Osaka in New Years Day felt a bit strange. There were barely any people around. Most people in Japan return to their hometowns during this time, so it makes sense. Nevertheless, it was a bit eerie.
朝６時半にアパートを出て、大阪方面の電車に乗り、親友と彼の家族と待ち合わせをしに行きました。電車の窓から初日の出を見ることができて、ほっとしました。元日の奈良から大阪までの乗車はいつもと違いました。人が非常に少なかったです。この時期に多くの人は実家に帰るから、当たり前かもしれません。それにしても、静かでした。

When I finally got to my best friend's station, he was waiting for me outside. We walked to his house to meet up with his family and start our road trip to Shimane. Although it was about a 4 hour drive, the time seemed to fly by. I had so much fun laughing and talking with my bestie that we were already in Shimane before I knew it.
大阪に着くと、親友が駅の外で待ってくれました。彼の家まで歩いて、彼の家族と集合して、島根へ出発しました。車で４時間ぐらいかかりましたが、時間があっという間に過ぎました。親友と語り合い、笑い合いながら、気がつくともう島根に着いていました。
Once we got to Shimane, we visited a famous temple called, Izumo Taisha. It's one of the largest temples in Japan and it is famous for "forming good relationships/love". I prayed at the temple, bought protective charms and fortunes, and even dressed up! It was so much fun! My fortune was mostly good, although for the marriage section, it told me to be careful of the advice of outsiders lol I'll keep that in mind, I guess.
島根に着いたら、「出雲大社」という有名なお社で初詣をしました。日本の中でも、特に大きいお社で、縁結びでも有名です。そこで、手を合わせて、お守りとおみくじを買って、伝統的な出雲神楽の衣装を着ました！おみくじは吉で、結婚以外は良いと書かれていました。結婚だけは、「周りのアドバイスを注意したほうが良い」と書かれていました。しっかり覚えておきます～！笑
When we got to my best friend's house later that evening, we ate "Osechi", a traditional Japanese New Years dish. This was my first time eating Osechi. I didn't expect it to be so delicious! I hope I can eat Osechi again one day.
夕方は親友の家で「おせち」という日本の伝統的なお正月料理を食べました。おせちを食べるのは初めてでしたが、思った以上においしかったです！できれば、いつかまたおせち料理が食べたいです！
My bestie's family was so kind and warm. They were very sweet to me, and watching them interact with one another was very entertaining. I felt so lucky to have been invited to spend this family-exclusive holiday together with them.
親友の家族が暖かくて優しかったのです。とても親切で、家族それぞれの相手に対する様子がとても面白かったです！お正月という大切な祝日を一緒に祝わせてくれて感謝しています！
In the morning, I made a snowman with my bestie and his family. It was super cute! We decided to call her "Yuki", which is Japanese for "snow". I thought of this cute but cheesy name. I was surprised everyone was okay with it though.
次の朝に、親友と彼の家族と一緒に雪だるまを作りました。可愛かったです。「雪」という名前を付けました。なぜなら、「雪」は英語で「Snow」という意味だからです。この可愛いけどダサい名前を付けたのは私です！でも、皆がそれで大丈夫と思ってくれてうれしかったです！
Thanks to my best friend as his family, I had a wonderful new year. Words can't express how grateful I am to have been able to experience an authentic Japanese New Year. I'm looking forward to seeing what else this year has to offer. So far, 2019 is off to a great start!
親友と彼の家族のおかげで、素敵なお正月が過ごせました。本物の日本のお正月が体験できて、心の底から感謝しています。２０１９年の年始は本当に最高でした！

大阪に着くと、親友が駅の外で待ってくれました。彼の家まで歩いて、彼の家族と集合して、島根へ出発しました。車で４時間ぐらいかかりましたが、時間があっという間に過ぎました。親友と語り合い、笑い合いながら、気がつくともう島根に着いていました。
