Gion Festival in Kyoto・京都の祇園祭り

皆さん、こんにちは！夏の本番となりました。

The heat is really starting to pick up lol Now that its midsummer, there are festivals like almost everyday here in Japan! This past weekend, my friends and I decided to get dressed up in yukata and go to Gion Matsuri, the biggest festival in Kyoto!! Kyoto is the previous capital of Japan. It's rich in tradition and culture. There is even a Japanese style Starbucks! If you wanna feel like you've been transported back in time, walking around Kyoto in a yukata (or a kimono, depending on the season) is the way to go! This is even more so the case during a festival!

So what is Gion Matsuri? Gion Matsuri is a festival of Yasaka Shrine! It lasts for the entire month of July! Talk about a big festival lol Not only is it the biggest festival in Kyoto, but it is also one of the biggest festivals in all of Japan! The festival is known for having many eloquently decorated floats which are paraded about Kyoto! Mainly down Shijou doori! The floats are only pulled on the 17th and the 24th though. On the other days, you can look at the floats up close. It's also famous for its long history! The festival first began in 869, as a ceremony to appease the gods. And since then, it has been held consistently, with very few interruptions. Very impressive! You can read more about the festival and its history here.
「祇園祭り」って何でしょう？祇園祭りというのは八坂神社の祭りです。7月の上旬から下旬まで、1ヶ月行われる祭りです。綺麗に飾ってある「やま」と「ほこ」がたくさんあり、それらが京都市街を巡る祭りです。でも、「やま」と「ほこ」を引っ張る日は7月17日と24日だけです。他の日は近くから見られます。この祭りの歴史も長いです。869年に始まって、その時からずっと続いています。最初は神様の気持ちを満たすためのお祭りでした。毎年、ほとんど滞ることなく、続いているらしいです。祇園祭についてもっと知りたかったらここをクリックしてくだいさい。

To start the day, I packed my yukata in a bag and went to Demachiyanagi, the last stop on the Keihan railway line, in Kyoto. I have a close friend who lives there, so I went to her house so we could put on our yukata together before enjoying the festival. She's pretty fashionable, so she's had never out here looking good 😉
昼ごろ、浴衣をバッグに入れて、出町柳駅へ向かいました〜 出町柳駅というのは、京阪電車の終着駅です。そこに仲の良い友達が住んでいます。その子のアパートに行って一緒に浴衣を着ました〜 とてもおしゃれな子だから、私を大変可愛くしてくれました。

After we finished getting ready, we left her place and headed to Gion Shijou, where the festival is held. We bought Kyoto Day passes (Kyou-meguri pass), so we could ride the buses as much as we wanted. Unfortunately, once the festival starts at 6pm, the roads close down, but coming from Nara, the tickets were still worth buying.
 準備が終わって、祭りに向かいました〜　京めぐりチケットを買ったから、バスと電車乗り放題でした。残念ながら、6時に祭りが始まったら、道路がしまって通れなくなります。でも、奈良から来たから、京めぐりチケットを買ってよかった！そのほうが安かった！

Once we got off the bus, we looked around at all of the floats, wandered around the festival grounds and took loads of pictures! We had a great time, but it was soooooo hot! It was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius) that day. On top of that, the humidity in Japan is no joke.　Nevertheless, the streets were filled with people! Luckily it wasn't one of the float-puling days, or else it would have been really crowded lol
バスの中からほこがたくさん見ました。バスを降りたら、四条通をふらふらして、写真をたくさん撮りました！楽しかったけれども、気温がやばいくらい高かったです。それに加えて、日本の湿気も半端じゃないです。その日は39度を越えましたが、人ごみがたくさんでした。動けないほど混雑していました！超びっくりしました！でも、幸いに、ほこを引っ張る日じゃなかった。その日でしたら、もっともっと混雑するらしいです。

Once everyone started to get hungry, we decided to look for a nice, cool place to sit, eat and cool down. In doing so, we came across a Gyoza restaurant, selling "Yaburekabure Gyouza" outside. The gyoza was deep fried and covered in tare sauce, mayonnaise and fish flakes. Just one look will make you think, "Yup, that's Kansai style" lol It was only ￥500 too! What a steal~ <3
皆、おなかもすいていたので、涼しいレストランを探しに行きました。そうすると、美味しそうな「やぶれかぶれ餃子」が目に入って食べようとしました！焼きたてのたれソースとマヨネーズと鰹節が上に載ってた餃子でした！めっちゃ関西って感じでした！しかも、わずか￥５００でした～！！完璧すぎた！

As the night went on, there were fewer and fewer people filling the streets. My friends and I decided to go to a cafe in the Teramachi shopping arcade. We are parfaits and had girl talk! At the end of the night we took Purikura pictures~ It was a really fun day! I want to come again next year on one of the days when the float gets pulled. It'll be insanely crowded, but I think it will make a great memory~!
夜遅くなると、人ごみがやっと減り、寺町通りにあるカフェに入って、皆でパフェを食べました！ガールズトークもして、プリクラを撮りました！楽しすぎる一日でした！また来年、ほこを引っ張る日に来なくちゃいけないです！すごく混雑するけど、きっと素敵な体験になると思います！
