Christmas in July・真夏のクリスマスの想い出

皆さん、こんにちは！
*Heads up: This one isn't travel-related. It's just a sweet memory that recently came to mind.*
*注目：この記事は旅行との関係がありません。先ほど、思い出した愛しい想い出です。*
The weather has been insane lately. Still over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius). Although it feels like a sauna outside, the inside of the office feels like an ice tundra. Seriously, the air conditioner feels like its cracked up to the highest setting. It's so cold in here that I've wrapped myself in a blanket.
近頃の天気には本当に驚かされます。連日39度を超えています。外はまるでサウナみたいですけれども、職員室の中は涼しいです。エアコンは普通の温度に設定してありますが、私にとって寒いのでブランケットで体を包み込んでいます。
All this cold air made me start reminiscing about my romantic Christmas rendezvous with past lovers. Do you know how Christmas is celebrated here in Japan? In Japan, Christmas, or rather Christmas Eve is a romantic holiday. Many people spend the day with their lovers, go on sweet dates, exchange gifts and eat Christmas cake and fried chicken.
この寒さを感じながら、昔の恋人とのクリスマスデートを思い出しました。クリスマスは日本でどんな様に祝われているのか知っていますか？日本で、クリスマス、というか、クリスマスイブは恋人の休日です。この日、たくさんの恋人は、デートに言ったり、プレゼントを交換したり、クリスマスケーキやフライドチキンを食べたりします。
Having lived here for two years, I'm no exception. Last year around Christmas, I spent the day with my boyfriend. We woke up together and ate brunch. I brought cute little Christmas party favors from the 100 yen store to make it more festive. After we finished eating, went off in search for Christmas cake. He forgot to pre-order one, so we ended up searching everywhere. Sadly, most of the stores were cleaned out.
二年も日本に住んでいますから、私もこの様なクリスマスを経験したことがあります。去年のクリスマスイブ、元彼と一日中を過ごしました。昼ごろに目覚めて、一緒に彼が作った昼ごはんを食べました。もっと楽しくするために、ダイソーで買ったクリスマスサングラスとヘッドバンドをつけました。ケーキを要約するのを忘れちゃいましたから、昼ごはんを食べ終わってから、ケーキを探しに行きました。残念ながら、クリスマスイブ当日でしたので、ケーキはほぼ無かったです。
This didn't deter us however. We decided to go to the mall as a last resort. We were going to ride on his motorcycle, but unfortunately it had started to rain, so we decided to hop on the bus instead. While waiting for the bus, he told me a quote I'll never forget, "Happiness and Sadness are two strings tied together in the same rope" We were going to ride his motorcycle, but we would have no way to hold our cake. But it started raining, so taking the bus worked out for the best!
それでも、諦めずに、モールに行こうとしました。最初は、彼のバイクで行こうとしましたが、そうしたら、ケーキが運べなくなったかもしれません。そこで、バスに乗ることにしました。バスを待っている間、彼の口から、今も忘れられない言葉が耳にしました。「禍福は糾える縄の如し」。なせなら、雨が急に降ってきて、もしバイクに乗ったら濡れてしまったからです。
Once we got off the bus, he told me he had a surprise for me. He took me toward the surprise before going to the mall. We ended up going to see illuminations in his city. They were breathtaking. I held his hand tightly and blushed as we walked through beautiful lights. He knew that I had wanted to go there and said that seeing my smile was already the best Christmas gift.
バスを降りたら、「モールに行く前にサプライズが待ってるよ」といって、そのサプライズの方へ向かいました。美しくてキラキラしていたイルミネーションでした。キレイすぎて、泣きそうになりました。彼が私の笑顔を見ると、私の頭を撫でながら、「これが最高のクリスマスプレゼントだ。」と言ってくれました。
After leaving the illuminations, we went to the mall. We managed to find a cute little chocolate log cake as well as a box of fried chicken to enjoy back at his place. We got back on the bus and opened both the cake and chicken on his table and turned on Star Wars. Before we pressed play on the movie, we exchanged gifts.
イルミネーションを見終わってから、モールに行きました。可愛いチョコレートロールケーキとフライドチキンを見つけて買いました。彼のアパートに帰ると、テーブルの上にケーキとチキンを置いて、テレビをつけました。スターウォーズを見ようとしました。映画を始める前に、プレゼントを交換しました。
By complete chance, we bought each other matching designer scarves, which we wore throughout the rest of the winter whenever we were on a date. We looked into each other's eyes and kissed each other and exchanged "I love you"s and "Merry Christmas"s. Then we hit play on the movie and enjoyed our food.
偶然で、おそろいのブランドマフラーをお互いのために買っていて笑うしか無かったです。残りの冬の日々にデートに行く際、そのおそろいマフラーをしました。プレゼントを交換したら、目を合わせて、「好きだよ」と「メリークリスマス」の言葉も交換して長いキスをしました。
Perhaps not the most over the top amazing Christmas, but it's a sweet memory that I will always keep near and dear to my heart. We're not together anymore, but he will always have a special place in my heart and memories.
皆さんには多分、たいしたことの無いの普通クリスマスだと感じられるかもしれませんが、私にとっては愛しくて大切な想い出です。もう彼と別れてしまいましたが、今でもずっと私の心に残っています。
I wonder how I'll spend Christmas this year... Stay tuned.
