Setsubun・節分

I really enjoyed Setsubun this year! Setsubun is a Japanese holiday which takes place every year on February 3rd. It is a holiday to celebrate the beginning of Japanese spring, and cleanse your home and spirit. I first learned about this holiday in my high school Japanese class. I've never actually done anything special to celebrate Setsubun until this year.
今年の節分は、特に楽しかったです。「節分」とは、毎年の２月３日に行われる日本の国民の祝日です。この祝日は春の始まりを祝い、家から悪霊を追い出し、自分の魂を綺麗にする祝日です。初めてこの祝日について習ったのは高校時代でした。それ以降から今年まで、節分に特別なことをあまりしませんでした。
On the day before Setsubun, on February 2nd, I went to a Setsubun festival with several friends. We bought and ate a lot of food from the tons and tons of foodstalls lined up. My Japanese friends told me that in recent years, the foodstalls have come to have more variety. Apparently in the past, mainly Japanese soul foods, like karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and takoyaki (fried octopus balls) were sold. However, these days, you can find just about anything at Japanese festival foodstalls. I bought karaage and Furi Furi Fries. My friends got fried cheese sticks, taiyaki (a fish-shaped pastry filled with red bean paste) and shorompo (mini dumplings).
節分の前の日の２月２日に友達と節分のお祭りに行きました。沢山の屋台から、おいしい食べ物をたくさん買って食べました。日本人の友達からすると、最近の屋台は昔と違って、幅広い食べ物を売っているらしいです。昔は日本の名物のたこ焼きやから揚げといったものを売りました。しかし、最近、ほとんどなんでも食べれます。私はから揚げとふりふりポテトを買いました。友達はチーズドッグやたい焼きや小籠包などを買いました。
After getting our food, we climbed up a mountain to taste and buy Setsubun beans. There were so many flavors including wasabi and sugar! Once we finished our beans, we climbed even further up the mountain to visit the only sweets shrine in Japan, Kasou Jinja!
屋台のおやつを食べ終わったら、山を少し登って、節分のお豆を買いに行きました。砂糖味やわさび味など、豆の味の種類がたくさんありました。豆を食べ終わったら、さらに山を登って、菓祖神社へ参拝しました。
Kasou Jinja is especially popular with pâtissiers and anyone else who makes sweets! At this shrine, you can pray that you'll be able to bake lots of tasty sweets. You can also pray that you'll be able to eat lots of sweets without getting fat! It's a very interesting shrine.
菓祖神社はパティシエやスイーツを作る人に特に人気があります。この神社でスイーツがたくさん焼けるように祈ることができ、また太らずにスイーツがたくさん食べるように祈ることもできます。とても面白い神社です。
At the Shrine, my friends and I prayed, then lined up to get free sweets and tea. We sat on a bench eating and chatting with one another for a little while. It felt so nice to relax and have some girl talk. After everyone finished their sweets, we went even further up the mountain to walk around and enjoy the scenery from the top of the mountain. We took dozens of pictures of the nature and beautiful sunset.
この神社で友達と一緒に手を合わせました。その後、お下がりのスイーツとお茶をいただきに並びました。ベンチで座って、スイーツを食べながら、語り合いました。ゆっくりして、ガールズトークをするのがすごく楽しかったです。食べ終わったら、山の頂上まで行って、綺麗な景色を眺めて写真をたくさん撮りました。緑の自然と夕焼けの写真を何枚も撮りました。
Around 5:30, we went back down the mountain to catch the Oni parade. ("Oni" are a type of Japanese monster that resemble a demon or ogre.) The Onis were so cute! They growled and swung their bats around. They made one little girl cry though. Once the parade finished, we went to an American-themed restaurant to eat dinner, before calling it a night.
５時半ぐらいになったら、山を降りて、鬼のパレードを見に行きました。鬼達がめっちゃ可愛かったです！鬼が唸りながらバットを振り回した。一人の小さい女の子を泣かせました。パレードが終わったら、アメリカのスポーツバーがテーマのレストランに行って夕飯を食べて解散しました。
On actual Setsubun day, I bought makizushi and dried soybeans. I downloaded a compass to point in this year's lucky direction, which is North East, and ate my makizushi in silence. Then I threw my soybeans at my door and chanted "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi". This is a chant which cast "Onis" out of your home, while welcoming good fortune.
節分の当日に巻き寿司と鬼打ち豆と福豆を買いました。スマホで恵方巻き用のコンパスをダウンロードしました。今年の東方は「東北東」なので、その方向にくけて、静かに巻き寿司を食べました。その後、豆をドアに投げて、「鬼は外！福は内」と詠唱しました。この詠唱は、家から鬼を追い出し、幸運を歓迎すると言われています。
It was so much fun to actually celebrate Setsubun this year! I can't wait to see what else this year has in store!
今年は節分を祝うことがすごく楽しかったです。今年は他に何が起こるのかがすごく楽しみにしています。
