Working as a Company Intern in Japan・日本の株式会社で研修した体験

You wouldn't believe the week I just had! I spent the past week interning at a Japanese company. For privacy reasons, I will not list the company name. However, this past week has taught me so much about Japanese work culture.
先週はやばかった！良い意味で！なぜなら、先週、一週間、日本の株式会社で研修しました。プライバシーのため、その企業の名前を書きません。けれども、その一週間、日本の仕事文化についていろいろ習いました。

As you may have seen from my goals checklist, while working as an ALT, I want to work on professional development and prepare myself for my next journey after finishing my time as an ALT. For that reason, I decided to participate in this internship program offered to JET participants.
私のゴール・リストを見たら、分かるかもしれませんが、ALTの勤務をしながら、次の一歩を進めるため、就職に関する成長をしたいのです。そこで、このJETの研修プログラムに参加しました。

If you're working for the JET program, have JLPT certification of N2 or above and are entering your 3rd, 4th or 5th year, guess what! You may be able to participate in a 5-day summer internship at a Japanese company. This is a great opportunity to not only learn more about Japanese culture on a deeper level, but to learn and observe firsthand about Japanese work culture and practices. For 5 days, I interned with a company in Osaka. I want to share some of the experiences I had and some of the things I learned. I absolutely recommend this opportunity to anyone with the above stated qualifications looking to work in Japan, improve professional skills or even broaden their professional network.
日本語能力試験2級を持ち、２年目以上のＪＥＴ参加者は、夏休みに日本の企業で五日間の研修プログラムに参加ができます。日本の文化だけではなくて、ビジネスマナーや営業を深く理解でき、人間関係を広げるチャンスでもあります。私は五日間、大阪の企業で研修しました。その経験について話したいと思います。もし、上記の資格を持っていれば、この機会にすすむことができます。

I spent five days at a company with another ALT from a different part of Japan. The Sunday before, we went to an orientation where we learned about use of honorific language, basic business manners and appropriate dress. The internship orientation was very informative and prepared us not only for this week long experience, but gave us an idea of what we would need to know if we want to work in Japan long term as a Japanese company.
五日間、もう一人の外国語指導助手と一緒に日本企業で研修しました。事前の日曜日に日本企業についてのオリエンテーションに行きました。敬語の使い方やビジネスマナー、制服についても習いました。今後、ずっと日本に勤めたいのかどうかや、日本企業の仕組みをもっと理解するためいろいろな役立つ情報を得ました。

During the internship itself, we were introduced to company employees and told about how different departments work. We listened to and made multiple presentations and took tours of the company. We even got to observe employees as they worked, and try some of the simpler tasks that they do on a daily basis. It was a great was to learn about the differences between Japanese and American companies and about the Japanese work environment as a whole.
研修期間中、従業員の方々に挨拶して、各部署の仕組みについてのプレゼンを聞きました。事務所と工場も見学しました。従業員の方の働いているところも見ることができました。基本作業体験もやらせてくださいました。アメリカと日本企業文化の違いについていろいろ習いました。

Each of the employees that we interacted with left us with valuable pieces of advice in regard to both job searching and working in general. They told us to always be willing to try new things and challenge ourselves, be creative, not to let failure along the way stop us from trying, establish good relationships with our coworkers and go out and talk to as many people as we can. In this world, nothing is more valuable than the experiences you gain just through living life.
各従業員の皆さんは、私たちに就職活動や日本企業で働くための素敵なアドバイスをくれました。新しいことにチャレンジすること、創造的なことをすること、失敗が起こっても、諦めずにまた立ち上がること、同僚や顧客と良い関係を作ること、そして、いろんな人と話してみて分かり合うこと等です。つまり、経験することが何よりも大事だということです。

Furthermore, as far as working at a Japanese company in particular is concerned, be aware that simply having the ability to speak both Japanese and English is not enough to succeed. It is important to accept and understand Japanese culture as well as be able to establish good relationships with Japanese people. However in that same right, it is important to understand our own value as foreigners and be aware of the value that our skills outside of Japanese language and our way of thinking brings to the table. Multiple perspectives lead to better problem solving and innovation, so while it's okay to integrate into the culture, we shouldn't try to assimilate, but rather celebrate what makes us different.
尚、日本企業で働くことにおいては、日本語と英語がぺらぺらだとしても、それだけじゃ足りないことも分かりました。それに加えて、日本の文化を理解し、日本人との良い人間関係を作れるようにならなくてはいけません。また、日本の文化に溶け込むことも必要です。ただし、完全に溶け込むばかりではなくて、自分の文化を忘れずに、大切にして、日本の文化を理解するようになったほうがベターです。その文化を使って、日本人との架け橋を作ることが大事です。その上で、日本語能力以外のスキルをどんどん改善していったほうが良いです。なぜなら、言語はツールに過ぎないからです。そのツールを使っていろんな人とコミュニケーションを取って、仕事を頑張らなくてはいけません。外国人として、自分の考え方と知識を日本人の同僚と共有しながら、改革を目指して、問題をだんだん解決に導くことが大事です。自分しか持っていない特徴を大事にし、外国人であることに誇りを持って、皆と文化交流をすべきだと思います。

After an insightful week, I’m leaning heavily toward working in Japan after I finish JET, but at the moment, I am still weighing my options. Nevertheless, this was a great opportunity for professional growth!
印象的な五日間であり、いろいろなことを習い、JETプログラムを終わってから、日本に残って就職するかもしれないと考えるようになりました。今のところはまだ決めてないですけれど。しかしながら、自分自身を成長させる、とても良い機会でした。
